PTA Screw Hardfacing Machines Delivered and Installed in Tunisia

Shanghai Duomu Industry Co., Ltd. delivered two automated PTA screw hardfacing machines to a customer in Tunisia: one vertical system and one horizontal system. The two machines were supplied for industrial screw cladding applications.

After the equipment arrived at the customer's facility, Duomu engineers travelled to Tunisia to carry out on-site installation and commissioning. The engineers also provided practical training for the customer's operators, helping them become familiar with the delivered equipment and its operation.

The work therefore continued beyond shipment. Both machines were installed and commissioned at the customer's facility, and the customer's personnel received operating guidance from the engineering team.

Vertical and Horizontal PTA Screw Hardfacing Equipment

Screw components are used in conveying and processing equipment across a range of industries. During operation, screw flights and other working surfaces come into repeated contact with the materials being handled. Depending on the operating conditions, this contact can cause abrasive wear.

PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) hardfacing is used to deposit wear-resistant alloy materials onto suitable metal substrates. For screw components, the equipment arrangement needs to suit the workpiece geometry, dimensions and the areas that require cladding.

For the Tunisia order, Shanghai Duomu supplied two machine configurations. The vertical and horizontal systems provide different ways to position and support the screw workpiece during processing.

Vertical PTA Screw Hardfacing Machine

The vertical PTA screw hardfacing machine uses an upright workpiece arrangement. When processing screw flights, the equipment configuration needs to take account of the component geometry, its positioning and access to the surfaces that require hardfacing.

Screw diameter, overall length, weight and fixture design all influence the machine arrangement. The final configuration should be matched to the actual workpiece rather than selected by machine orientation alone.

Shanghai Duomu manufactures PTA vertical screw hardfacing machines for applications involving screw flights, screw conveyors and extruder screws. View the PTA Vertical Screw Hardfacing Machine to learn more about this equipment configuration.

Horizontal PTA Screw Hardfacing Machine

The second machine supplied to the customer features a horizontal workpiece arrangement. For elongated screw components, the machine layout needs to account for factors such as workpiece length, diameter, support and loading requirements.

The workpiece support and welding arrangement should be selected according to the actual screw dimensions and the areas requiring hardfacing. This helps ensure that the machine configuration is suitable for the intended application.

Duomu also manufactures automatic screw and shaft welding equipment, with configurations developed for screw, shaft and spiral blade cladding requirements.

The two machines provide different workpiece arrangements. The appropriate configuration depends on the screw design, dimensions, weight, fixture requirements and production process.

PTA Hardfacing for Screw Flights and Screw Conveyors

Screw flights are working surfaces that come into direct contact with conveyed material. In applications involving abrasive materials, repeated contact can gradually wear the flight surface and edges.

PTA hardfacing provides a method of depositing wear-resistant alloy material onto suitable metal substrates. It can be considered for protecting new components or for rebuilding selected worn areas, depending on the component material and service conditions.

When selecting a screw flight hardfacing machine or a screw conveyor hardfacing solution, the following workpiece details should be reviewed:

•  Workpiece dimensions: Screw length, outer diameter and overall weight.
•  Flight geometry: Pitch, thickness, profile and the shape of the screw component.
•  Base material: The substrate material and its compatibility with the proposed alloy and process.
•  Hardfacing area: The specific surfaces that require wear protection or repair.
•  Production requirements: Loading method, processing frequency and the required level of automation.

These details influence workpiece positioning, fixture design and the movement arrangement of the welding system.

For more information about plasma cladding on spiral components, see Duomu’s Spiral Blade application page. It includes related spiral blade and spiral shaft applications.

On-Site Installation and Commissioning in Tunisia

After the two machines arrived at the customer's facility, Shanghai Duomu engineers travelled to Tunisia to support installation and commissioning. The work was carried out at the customer's site using the delivered vertical and horizontal systems.

The engineering team completed the installation and commissioning process for both machines. Carrying out this work at the customer’s facility allowed the machines to be handled in the environment where they would be used.

For automated PTA equipment, the machine arrangement, workpiece positioning and welding system all need to be considered as part of the installation. The on-site work provided an opportunity for the customer’s team to work directly with Duomu engineers during the equipment handover.

Operator Training at the Customer's Facility

After installation and commissioning, Duomu engineers provided practical training for the customer’s operators. The training took place at the customer’s facility and used the machines supplied for the order.

Working with the actual equipment allowed the operators to become familiar with the machine configuration and receive operating guidance directly from the engineering team. On-site instruction also gave the customer’s personnel an opportunity to raise questions about the delivered machines.

The operator training formed part of the equipment handover, rather than ending the supplier’s involvement when the machines arrived at the factory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PTA screw hardfacing machine used for?

A PTA screw hardfacing machine uses the Plasma Transferred Arc process to deposit wear-resistant alloy material onto suitable screw components. Applications can include screw flights, screw conveyors and extruder screws, depending on the workpiece and equipment configuration.

What is the difference between vertical and horizontal screw hardfacing machines?

The main difference is the workpiece arrangement. A vertical system positions the workpiece upright, while a horizontal system supports it horizontally. The suitable arrangement depends on the component dimensions, geometry, weight, loading method and production requirements.

Can PTA cladding equipment be configured for different screw sizes?

The machine structure, workpiece fixtures and movement arrangement can be evaluated against the customer’s drawings, dimensions and process requirements. The final configuration should be confirmed using the actual workpiece information.

Does Shanghai Duomu provide overseas installation and operator training?

For the Tunisia order, Shanghai Duomu engineers travelled to the customer’s facility and completed on-site installation, commissioning and operator training for the two delivered machines.
